Legislation is killing property investment

New legislation introduced in a piecemeal manner is killing investment in the private rental sector.

Legislation is killing property investment

Homelessness is increasing and landlords are leaving the market. Complex legislation is more costly to administer, driving up the cost of rents, increasing the cost to tenants.

Rather than helping the tenants of Ireland, Minister Kelly has had a devastating effect on the sector damaging the availablity of accommodation, and causing misery and needless cost to the ordinary tenant, at a time when accommodation is most needed.

We are currently loosing two investment properties for every one that is purchased. Minister Kelly needs to be increasing accommodation for tenants not decreasing it. Landlords are part of the solution.

Stephen Faughnan, chairman IPOA, outlines: “The sooner we get rid of Alan Kelly from Environment the better, a new minister may understand the sector better, we really have enough.

"Fair tax treatment would go a long way to reverse the trend, allowing legitimate expenses to be offset against rental income, keeping legislation simply to understand and administer is essential.”
