Fianna Fáil would be making a grave error in sharing government with Fine Gael. Such so-called stability would mean the most right-wing government in the history of the State for a further five years.

As for Labour’s continuing support of Fine Gael, the mind boggles. Oblivion will be the result. Sinn Féin should be wary of what they wish for. Standing back to allow a coalition of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael could ultimately rebound on their party at great cost.

If Micheál Martin’s declaration that he would like a more open government is sincere, then a coalition of Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin, along with the smaller parties and independents, would be the most democratic approach, with a rotation of Taoisaigh between Micheál Martin and Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin.
