The reality of crime and violence in rural Ireland

Some weeks ago, a journalist with a Sunday newspaper said: “Rural Ireland remains peaceful, and is certainly not succumbing to a tidal wave of violence and burglary.”

I sent a letter to the newspaper, refuting the journalist. It wasn’t published, but I received a polite reply from an associate editor, informing me that the journalist, “ . . . .lives in rural Ireland . . . so if there was a ‘tidal wave of violence and burglary’ then I’d think he’d have noticed.”

I hope the associate editor and the journalist were watching the Late Late Show on Friday, October 16. I don’t think either the panel or the crime victims in the audience would agree with their take on rural crime.
