In an article on Brian Cowen’s evidence to the banking inquiry (Irish Examiner, July 23), Michael Clifford says of Cowen, “He appears to have shown a serious lack of curiosity about what was unfolding around him”.

He also wrote: “Here was a highly intelligent politician who was well capable of dealing with anything thrown at him by the inquiry committee.”

Surely a “highly intelligent” Taoiseach should have shown a lively curiosity about the nation he was charged with leading?
