Women’s advocacy belies President’s role
The Constitution Review Group identified two features that define the office of President of Ireland. Firstly, the President, in performing his, or her, official duties, does not and cannot represent any particular group, or interest — but must represent all the people of Ireland. Secondly, that the Constitution underlines the non-political, non-partisan nature of the office.
The Oireachtas All Party Committee on the Constitution subsequently endorsed the conclusion of the Constitution Review Group that the President should not be given further discretionary powers.
If this invitation has been accepted without the authority of the Government, how can the participation of the President in a global solidarity group be considered lawful, authentic or appropriate?
If the President acted on the authority of the Government, how can this advice be consistent with, and respect, the symbolic value of this office, its non-political nature and the constitutional and legal parameters that clearly define it?
