Mental health unit: Bright future for CUH patients

For years, the old mental health unit on the ground floor of Cork University Hospital came in for criticism because of its dour, unappealing nature - hardly conducive to aiding the recovery of patients.

Mental health unit: Bright future for CUH patients

The Mental Health Commission repeatedly took issue with its “generally unsatisfactory structural nature, for modern acute care”.

But the good news is that a new, modern and up to the mark unit is about to be opened that promises a bright future - in every sense - both for patients and for the medical staff who work there.

Pleasing architecture and thoughtful design are the hallmarks of the new unit and credit must go to the HSE and the Department of Health for overseeing the project. Both come in for a lot of criticism when shortcomings are revealed so it is important to acknowledge when a job is well done.

As the report by our health correspondent today shows, little has been left to chance to ensure a tranquil and peaceful setting for people with mental health issues.

While protecting the privacy and dignity of patients, the unit will also contribute to getting rid of the stigma associated with mental illness.

There is even provision for the holding of Mental Health Tribunals where patients detained involuntarily can appeal their detention.

Congratulations to all involved.
