The CSO figures that show a 9.3% increase to €2.8bn in spending by visitors to Ireland over the first nine months of 2014 are a credit to all concerned and a vindication of the decision to reduce Vat for the hospitality sector.

The figures are another unambiguous sign that the economic recovery is well under way.

Translated into feet under restaurant tables, this means we are attracting more visitors than ever before and that they are spending more than ever before. This is a considerable achievement but one that should never be taken for granted. Everyone involved in the sector, from suppliers to hoteliers should be helped to keep this golden goose alive. It would be cheering too if the figures had an impact on the wages paid in what is a low-pay industry, indeed a moderate increase might be linked to any further Government support.
