Work law is out of sync with breastfeeding
The Health Service Executive (HSE) and World Health Organisation (WHO) recommend natural-term breastfeeding up to the age of two years and supports child-led weaning. But employment law supports breastfeeding mums only up until six months post-partum. However, the majority of mums are still on maternity leave at this time; this invalidates the law and support.
I call on elected representatives to review this meaningless law and encourage employers to support breastfeeding mums in the workplace over an extended period.
