Kenny failed on promises making a mockery of ‘democratic revolution’
Mr Kenny was elected with a mandate to implement the most far reaching and fundamental reform of the governance structure of this country since it was founded, and he has failed to live up to the promises he made before the 2011 election. His actual performance in government makes a mockery of his ‘democratic revolution’ soundbite. Mr Walsh is entitled to wallow in denial all he wants but that does not mean I am obliged to pander to his delusions about the performance of Fine Gael in government.
The fact remains no modern developed country’s constitution contains a prohibition on abortion except Ireland. Even El Salvador, which has a more backward attitude to women than most Latin American countries, and denies a woman any rights at all over her own body, leading to unsafe abortions being the second highest cause of maternal mortality, does permit abortion in certain circumstances. Abortion is a moral choice and provision for abortion services should be legislated for by the Oireachtas in line with the demands of the people. If current opinion polls are anything to go by, Mr Walsh is in for a disappointment if he thinks the majority of Irish people would be rallying outside the Dáil to prevent such legislation allowing a woman to make her own choice and to have the procedure take place in the Republic. Would Mr Walsh prefer to pretend about 150,000 Irish women don’t travel to the UK for an abortion?
