Creeping corporate agenda by GAA

The decision to employ a private security firm at Páirc Uí Chaoimh to control fans attending the Munster finals is just the latest advance in the race to turn the GAA into a corporation. Until now clubs provided volunteer stewards, but in the name of maximising profits the heavies have been called in.

The Munster Council says they’re doing it for the fans, as the employment of a security firm will permit them to increase spectator capacity.

So why then does the forthcoming development of the stadium include ‘premium’ boxes, which clearly reduce spectator capacity in favour of increased profits (and which also reinforce class divisions)?

I hope that GAA fans will reject the creeping corporate agenda of the bureaucrats, and reassert the original democratic intentions of the association.
