EU indifferent to Syria

The daily slaughter and huge refugee crisis in Syria are not a concern for Eamon Gilmore or his fellow EU foreign ministers; they’ve been asleep. They show no outrage, horror, or shame at the abandonment of Syria to atrocities, barrel bombs, starvation, gassing, and other inhumanities.

Their attitude is — let the US or the UN worry about Syria, while Europe deals with its economic troubles. Who cares if Lebanon, Jordan, or Turkey buckle under 2.5m Syrian children and adults? That’s their problem.

What is the EU supposed to do? Oppose Russian shipments of weaponry, past Greece and EU waters, to Syria? Should the EU help Turkey, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Lebanon to broker a truce? It looks like the EU’s leadership opted to do nothing. Isn’t that what the UN is for? Syrians can count on the UN, see?
