Kerins resigns - Only herself to blame

The resignation of Rehab chief executive Angela Kerins once again highlights the need for transparency in so many sectors of Irish society.

The move comes following controversy surrounding the low level of profits from lotteries run by the Rehab Group and her reluctance to reveal her salary of €240,000 a year, as well as the amount paid to senior executives within the group.

She said she made her decision to retire due to the impact on Rehab and on her family.

While many will express sympathy for Ms Kerins, it is difficult to escape the conclusion that she has only herself to blame for leaving the highest paid charity position in the country.

Her appearance in February before the Oireachtas Public Accounts Committee was less than forthcoming.

If she decides to appear, as scheduled, for a second time next Thursday, it is hoped that she will be more revealing, if only to repair her reputation and that of a charity that has enhanced the lives of tens of thousands of people since its establishment in 1949.
