We must stand firm on Russian actions

In relation to Russian ambassador to Ireland Maxim Peshkov’s comments that future restrictions imposed on Russia would be a “double-edged blade” for the Irish economy, I would like to remind Mr Peshkov that it is not the prerogative of any state to bully another state into changing its policy or values, or indeed annexing the territory of a “brotherly nation”.

We must stand firm on Russian actions

I would sincerely hope that the Irish Government stands with the European Community in condemning the illegal actions of the Russian Federation, and to not give in to threats from Russia.

In order for economic sanctions to have the desired effect on Russia, costs will have to be incurred in Paris, Berlin and London, as well as in Dublin.

The Irish Government must ask itself whether it is willing to pay the price in defence of international law, and in protest to Russian actions which threaten the security of Europe.
