Yesterday’s statement from Labour backbenchers, demanding access to budget information before policy decisions are finalised, brings further focus on how power has become concentrated and how marginalised — if not irrelevant — swathes of our politicians are.

Power concentrated - Worthwhile suggestion

In recent years, and very often with good reason, decision-making power has become ever more concentrated. It is not immediately apparent that this has improved the quality of our governance but it has done little to enhance the quality of our democracy. In fact, it has undermined it.

As we have said many, many times, our political structures need to be re-engineered to reflect today’s world. Yesterday’s proposals seem entirely rational and should be at least partially implemented.
