Long the lubricant of social life and the cause of terrible despair when misused, alcohol consumption in pubs, hotels, or restaurants has fallen by such a degree that half of these businesses face an uncertain future.

Sport events face an uncertain future too as Government is to consider legislation to prohibit sponsorship of major sports events by drink companies.
