Your editorial “Wear poppy with pride” (Nov 4) ignores the fact that the poppy does not just commemorate the World Wars but also all campaigns conducted by the British Army since 1918 — including their less than savoury exploits in Ireland and other colonies.

Setting an example

The tone of UK Remembrance Day is totally uncritical of these campaigns.

That is why most Irish people do not wear the poppy, not because of “bile and bitterness”. In fact, we have seen in recent years that people generally do not mind those who fought for the Allies being commemorated as individuals.
