Animal welfare ‘compromised’ for profit

As an animal lover I fully endorse the sentiments expressed by Chris McCarthy (Letters, Aug 20).

Animal welfare ‘compromised’ for profit

I have always believed that the use and abuse of animals in so-called “sport” is one of the least admired traits of us human beings. Whether it is horse racing or greyhound racing, the welfare of the animals is generally compromised in the interest of profit.

How many thousands of “slow greyhounds” die in the first few years of their lives, simply because they cannot win races and generate money for their owners/trainers? The IGB makes millions on the backs of these dogs, yet a very small percentage of this money is allocated to the retired and unwanted greyhounds.
