Bid to weaken our free and fair judicial system
I can say that our judges at all levels have served the Irish people well and I take serious exception to this referendum which will undoubtedly weaken and isolate this small but hugely important group of men and women. The issue of their pay could be addressed as new appointments are made rather than in this ham-fisted manner which smacks of 1930s Germany. Democracy can only function if we, the people, have access to a judicial system that is free, fair and not subject to any form of intimidation, open or covert. It is ironic and particularly worrying that, in the second referendum, the Government seeks to give itself a judicial role, with the power to make findings of guilt or innocence on people under investigation.
I know, if I am facing any charge, I would much rather stand before any judge rather than a self-appointed tribunal of politicians. The Government would do well to cut the numerous and generous pensions and expenses regime that they themselves enjoy rather than alienating the judges, many of whom, incidentally, have voluntarily accepted pay cuts.
