Putting rescue service heroes in the frame

THANK you for publishing my photos of the dramatic rescue from the River Lee (July 9).

I am sorry to say, however, that I believe you missed the point of me sharing them with you and consequently the people of Ireland.

It appeared to be a diary of my adventure in Cork when I thought the story was the actions of the brave men of the fire brigade who risked their own lives and safety by leaping into the very danger from which they pulled the unfortunate young woman.

In America we throw about the word “hero” far, far to often to the point of it becoming trite, but, in this situation the term heroic surely applies to these unnamed men of the emergency services.

The people of Cork should know and appreciate how fortunate they are having such men in their service.

For me (like everyone around me at the time who did not leap to this woman’s aid), God bless the brave men and women of fire brigades and emergency services throughout Ireland without who this one young woman and her family would not be enjoying another day. Good job lads and thank you for your service and bravery.
