It’s time to define the ‘vulnerable in society’

SINCE the economic downturn began in this wonderful country of ours a few years ago we have had Taoiseach Brian Cowen, ministers and every Fianna Fáil and Green party TD telling us how all the decisions that are being made are based on protecting the vulnerable in society.

Each day we hear and read about cutbacks that hit the sick, the disabled, the unemployed and those at risk from poverty.

Perhaps it is time for the Government to define exactly just who it is that they claim to be protecting.

It is a simple question. Who are “the vulnerable in society”?

In the Cystic Fibrosis Association we have reports from around the country of specialised staff – nurses, physiotherapists, etc – on sick or maternity leave who are not being replaced. This situation creates more stress and a higher risk to people with cystic fibrosis who require this specialist care when they attend hospitals.

As with other people who require hospital attention, people with cystic fibrosis require immediate care.

If it is not forthcoming as a result of these cutbacks or budget decisions, the outcome could be fatal.

Decisions requiring priority in regard to funding should be made with a focus on people most in need – not budget considerations.

So please, Taoiseach, define the vulnerable in society and let’s support the people first.
