Not flattered

AS the Leaving Cert students of the boys’ secondary school in which I teach gathered for their graduation Mass last Thursday evening, I congratulated the young man who was to deliver the valedictory address on his stylish suit, collar and tie, comparing his professional look to that of a dynamic bank manager.

Not flattered

He was, unfortunately, quite insulted by the comparison, responding in a tone that left me in no doubt of his opinion of that profession.

I can only plead the ignorance of age in not realising that a once much admired title has become a pejorative term.
