City lane name should not be changed

THE new developments opening in and around St Patrick’s Street in Cork city are to be welcomed. It is unfortunate, however, that the developers of the new shopping centre at Faulkner’s Lane have apparently seen fit to change the name to the ridiculous “Opera Lane”.

City lane name should not be changed

Faulkner’s Lane was named after Riggs Faulkner who opened a bank there in the 1760s. As an historic street name which harks back to the city’s past, it should be preserved unless the people of Cork wish otherwise. Who are the developers to decide that Mr Faulkner is no longer worthy of recognition?
