‘Unity’ government is not the answer

ACCORDING to your editorial (October 27), there is no solution to our present political and financial problems unless our politicians form a government of unity.

Your message seems to be that we officially declare a one-party state ad infinitum.

Your recipe for the problems that have been created by almost 20 years of virtual one-party rule is to prolong this arrangement by getting rid of opposition’s role of ensuring the Government is held accountable.

Your argument that the opposition not be allowed to put forward an alternative strategy, but that it be incorporated into a monolithic government, is the antithesis of democracy.

There is no need for an early election. We had a general election little more than a year ago in which a government with a sizeable majority was formed. The terms of the recent budget were approved in the Dáil with a large majority and a round of applause. Let them get on with it.

If the opposition were to support the Government, it would leave no opposition to confront government at the next election.

Contrary to your editorial view, that would not inspire confidence. Indeed it could destroy both our democracy and our economy.
