Mayo breakpoint for Greens in government

IF the Green agenda is really going to mean anything at all in terms of communities, habitats, resources and the environment, I suggest Environment Minister John Gormley and his colleagues consider kissing Fianna Fáil and the PD coalition goodbye in defence of all who stand to lose so much in Glenad, Rossport and Erris.

Mayo breakpoint for Greens in government

I think any hope I had that the Greens’ involvement in government might actually make a difference is well and truly quashed.

Remember Michael McDowell? Do you remember how some people celebrated when he was defeated?

Well, I didn’t because I feared that in his absence we would encounter the same railroading of democracy, the same indifference to community voice.

What is happening this week at Glenad and in Broadhaven Bay in Erris is just the latest crime committed by the State in a saga that has run since the Ray Burke days.

What is brilliant is that in spite of everything thrown at them, the community continues to resist. I suggest the rest of us think about whose side we are on and what we are going to do.
