Economic argument is open and shut

THOSE opposing the EU Reform Treaty want to have the referendum debate focused on obscure and technical arguments.

Those supporting the treaty should focus on the central argument that it is in Ireland’s economic interest to vote ‘yes’.

This is the bigger picture and we should never lose sight of it. Our commitment to Europe is a key selling point to companies which want to invest in Ireland as the gateway to the EU marketplace of 500 million people.

Those opposing the treaty do not want to engage in a debate as to why we should vote ‘no’ on economic grounds. This is because the ‘yes’ camp will hammer them on this point.

Ireland is an exporting country. We are thriving within the internal market structure. We are succeeding economically not despite the EU, but because of it.

I am voting ‘yes’ because this will help us develop our economy, create more jobs, generate more taxes and this, in turn, will help to put in place improved government spending programmes.
