It’s smart to speak Irish

A NEW YEAR’S resolution that parents could keep is to speak more Irish to their children.

This simple act will increase the intellectual capacity of both children and parents. Linguistic scientists would agree that a bilingual child is more intelligent than if he or she had only one language. If we believe that intelligence is the ability to evaluate from different angles, a second language gives people that capacity because words describing similar things have different values in different languages. It makes sense to speak Irish to our children now because they will have more opportunity to put it to use. So increase our children’s intellect tré níos mó gaeilge a labhairt leo.
