RTÉ won’t put hard questions to Sinn Féin
A case in point is that of Esther Uzell Rafferty. She is the sister of Joseph Rafferty, who was murdered by the IRA just two years ago. There is strong evidence that SF members are withholding vital information that could bring the perpetrators to justice.
An opportunity for Esther to ask Gerry Adams for help in her quest for the truth was recently denied by the Today with Pat Kenny show.
Are we to assume then that Mr Adams’ crusade to make his party the respectable face of republicanism is more important to RTÉ than one family’s pursuit of justice? And if so, is this highly selective approach to programming in the public interest? I don’t think so.
After all, it is we the public who, by having to pay an annual TV licence fee to RTÉ, are being short-changed.
We can only hope that this negative attitude to ‘genuine’ public service broadcasting is seen for what it is, and is swiftly tackled at the top level.
