Limit to voting rights

AS an Irish emigrant living in Australia for more than 20 years, I disagree with Terry O’Neill’s letter headlined ‘Emigrants have reason to look back in anger’ (Irish Examiner, March 22).

We might have reason to look back in anger on many issues, but not voting rights. Those of us who have chosen not to live in Ireland gave up our right to vote when we emigrated.

Why should we have a say in the running of a country when we know little of the day-to-day issues it is facing? Any emigrant who wants the right to vote in Ireland should return permanently.
