Ban ads for unhealthy food aimed at children

THE Government should ban TV adverts for food and drink products that are high in fat, salt and sugar and which specifically target children under the age of 16.

Child obesity is a serious problem that must be tackled.

Such a ban is being introduced in Britain after four years of research and consultation.

This research included 2,000 interviews with children, parents and teachers, as well as details of the family eating habits of 11,000 people.

It found that television advertising does have an effect on the dietary preferences of children.

There should be a ban on these adverts not only during children’s programmes but also during youth-oriented and adult programmes which attract a higher than average proportion of viewers under 16.

The Government would have to undertake careful study of the type of food and drink products to be banned, but the protection of our children’s health must be the overriding interest.
