No social capital for slapping a child

IF ONE takes up golf, tennis or, for that matter, any new endeavour, more then likely some form of training is required.

In most jobs, if new practices or technologies are introduced it would be an unwise manager who would not insist on some basic form of instruction if only to cover his own butt in the event of failure.

On the Late Late Show recently, there was a discussion on the issue of slapping children. I could not believe that at least two-thirds of the largely young audience agreed with physically beating children as a means of imposing discipline.

The most important job I will ever do is rear my three children. Over the years, my wife and I have used many resources to fulfil this task. Our own upbringing was a vital source of knowledge. We also attended parenting courses, read books and talked to other parents.

When it’s time for my own children to become parents, I hope they will build on their own experiences with further understanding and education. Politicians, this is the way you build social capital.
