Midwife unit a model for hospital births nationwide
Many women describe very traumatic birth experiences while a huge increase in Caesarean sections was also noted. The consensus among many, both consumers and health professionals, is that midwives view childbirth as a natural physiological process, unlike doctors who have medicalised childbirth.
I attended the midwifery-led unit (MLU) in Cavan General Hospital from December 2005 until the birth of my daughter, Muirne, on July 23 last year.
The MLU is a pilot study and, as such, is not a service offered on a permanent basis. It is not possible to praise the MLU highly enough for the service they provide. Every aspect was outstanding.
Each of the midwives I encountered during my various appointments demonstrated a high level of professionalism and competency. The facilities provided within the MLU were modern and relaxed with a five-star standard of hygiene.
The process is efficient and thorough with care shared seamlessly between the GP and the MLU. There is little or no waiting time and the service is respectful and personalised.
Relevant, well-delivered ante-natal care ensured I had a healthy pregnancy and was physically and emotionally prepared for the birth.
There was an excellent level of care during labour and delivery (in line with the resurgence of natural births) and I required no medical intervention.
Follow-up education and support in my own home over the first seven days was invaluable with breastfeeding and caring for my baby.
It is imperative that the MLU in Cavan General be made a permanent service.
I feel very strongly that all expectant parents should have the option of availing of such a service and that it be rolled out to all hospitals offering maternity services.
In view of the intense criticism of the health service, there is need for midwives to be given more autonomy and to free the gynaecologists and obstetricians to concentrate on complicated pregnancies and births.
I feel the MLU service in Cavan is playing a potentially leading national role in this provision of maternity care. The MLU also provides a golden opportunity to demonstrate the capabilities of the HSE-North Eastern Area health service in meeting the aspirations of the strategies for health and national primary care.
I trust my comments will be taken on board when reviewing the service.
