We ignore the Stern warning at our peril

THE recent review by Nicholas Stern, head of the British government’s economic service and former World Bank chief economist, on the consequences of global warming is also applicable to Ireland (Irish Examiner, October 31).

We ignore the Stern warning at our peril

Our record of non-compliance with the Kyoto protocol is one of cynical indifference. Government policy is that we will buy our way out by paying fines rather than take what might be perceived to be unpopular measures.

There is no tax on aviation fuel comparable to that imposed on other transport fuels — it suddenly becomes more clear why airlines can offer such cheap fares. An Europe-wide initiative is needed urgently so the real costs of air travel are borne by the consumer. This will be unpopular and will prompt an outcry but it is surely inevitable.

We need all-party agreement on measures to curb greenhouse emissions.
