Ideologically-driven buses going nowhere

PD Transport spokesman Senator Tom Morrissey (Irish Examiner letters, August 23) offers yet another piece of evasion in his response to my letter pointing out how that party’s policy on Dublin bus transport was ideologically driven (Irish Examiner letters, August 15).

Ideologically-driven buses going nowhere

Instead of responding to my demand to know why Dublin commuters are suffering because the PDs are blocking the introduction of 200 new buses, all Senator Morrissey does is repeat the PDs’ dogmatic mantra that competition is always best — no matter what the circumstances. .

Try telling that to the long-suffering commuters like myself on the 27B bus route from Liberty Hall to Harristown bus garage, or indeed to any of the other commuters who use the various routes operating out of there. We are stuck with the worst heaps of junk in the whole city fleet.

And all because the PDs are blocking 200 low-floor, wheelchair-accessible buses. Or try Dublin Bus commuters on any other route who are also enduring a deteriorating service.

And what about all the disabled people, including many in wheelchairs, who are being denied access to public transport because of the PDs’ attitude.

I wonder how often the senator, most PD supporters and all Government ministers use public transport?

The senator comes from Castleknock, a very well-to-do area in Dublin with an above average level of car usage. Despite this, the No 37 bus to Castleknock has the latest low-floor, wheelchair-accessible vehicles. Odd, or what?
