Ireland weather: Mixed outlook for the week ahead

Rain is set to dominate much of this week, while temperatures move closer to the norm for the time of year, with Met Éireann predicting highs of around 21C.

Monday started dry but cloudy with limited bright or sunny spells. Cloud is die to thicken from the southwest with some outbreaks of rain through the afternoon and evening, some turning heavy. It will turn drier for a time from the south later with highs of 16C to 21C for the week. 

Showery rain will extend eastwards across the country later on Monday night, sometimes turning heavy with lows reaching between 11C and 15C. 

Tuesday will see the rain clear eastwards, followed by some sunny spells and scattered showers, some of which will be heavy in the north and east. It will then gradually ease from the west through the afternoon and evening before becoming dry. Highs of 16C to 21C are set for the day. 

It will be mainly dry with clear spells on Tuesday night, with some lingering showers in the north. Lows of 9C to 13C are set for the night. 

Wednesday will start off dry before rain and drizzle develops in the west during the morning and spreads eastwards. It will become persistent at times in the north but light and patchy in the southeast. Highs of 16C to 19C are set for the day. 

Thursday will be a bright day with sunny spells and some showers, these will be mainly in the north and northwest. Highs of 15C to 21C are expected, with the warmest conditions in the southeast. 

Friday will be cloudy in the north and northwest with some rain and drizzle, but it should stay largely dry elsewhere with the best of sunny spells in the southeast. Highs of 16C to 22C are expected. 

Something for the weekend 

Looking ahead to the weekend, Saturday will see the warmest weather come into the south and southeast with temperatures in the low 20s. It will be rather cloudy at times elsewhere, with some light rain at times and temperatures in the mid to high teens. 

Current indications show Sunday will be sunnier and a couple of degrees warmer in general.
