Limerick City and County Council has banned food trucks from a green space near the TUS Gaelic Grounds after the area was damaged by a trader’s vehicle.

Following a motion submitted by local councillor Shane Hickey-O’Mara, the council said casual trading licences will exclude Greystones Park after complaints from residents.

Greystones Park is located near the TUS Gaelic Grounds, headquarters of Limerick GAA, which is set to host a number of matches this summer.

Hours after the Limerick v Cork National Hurling League final on April 5, local residents found the green area had been damaged by a trader’s truck.

In a response to the motion by Mr Hickey-O’Mara, senior executive officer Sonja Reidy said alternative locations are being considered.

“Following recent damage to the green area at Greystones Park arising from casual trading activity, the Council has taken immediate action with the trader to remediate the damage caused.

“Having assessed the extent of the damage and engaged with local residents, it has been determined that Casual Trading Licenses will exclude the green area,” Ms Reidy said.

She added the council is “actively examining alternative locations” for licensed food traders on GAA match days – locations that will not impact residential grounds.

“Engagement with relevant stakeholders, including residents, is ongoing to address any further concerns and to ensure a balanced approach that supports both community interests and regulated trading activity”, she added.

The council will also introduce signage to indicate that parking and trading are prohibited on the green area.
