A member of An Garda Síochána has been hospitalised following an incident at Shannon Airport on Saturday afternoon.

Gardaí say they responded to an incident of criminal damage at the airport just after 4pm.

Three women, aged between 20 and 50, breached the perimeter fence of the airport and caused criminal damage to a parked plane.

The three women were subsequently arrested at scene and are currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Garda stations in Co Clare.

During the course of the arrests, one member of An Garda Síochána was injured. She has since since been taken to University Hospital Limerick for assessment.

Gardaí say her injuries are non-life threatening.

This is the second security incident to have occurred at Shannon Airport this month.

On the evening of Thursday, May 1, the airport was closed for a time after a security breach in which a van attempted to enter the airport.

The van had crossed a grass area on the main road into the airport and crashed through the perimeter fence.

Three individuals were subsequently arrested in connection with the incident.
