Teenage boy, 16, killed in e-bike hit-and-run incident in Co Clare named locally

A 16-year-old boy who died following a hit-and-run incident in Co Clare on Friday night has been named locally as Bryan Lowe from Cloonlara and Westbury, south-east Clare.
The teenager was found unresponsive at the roadside shortly after 11pm on Friday following a collision involving the e-bike he was riding.
The incident happened on the L3050 at Cottage Cross near Cloonlara, close to the Clare-Limerick border.
Gardaí said a second vehicle involved in the collision failed to remain at the scene.
The teenage boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
The road was closed following the collision and local diversions were put in place to facilitate an examination by Garda forensic collision investigators.
The coroner has been notified and an autopsy is due to take place.
The boy’s family posted photographs of him and said they were devastated by news of his sudden death.
Figures from gardaí show there have been 127 road deaths up to September 4, an increase on the 112 deaths in 2025.
An aunt of the boy stated in another online post: “It’s with deepest sadness that my 16-year-old nephew Bryan Lowe has passed away under cruel circumstances, funeral arrangements to come.”
A family friend stated: “I'm devastated. Every parent’s worst nightmare. I can't imagine the heartbreak.”
Bryan Lowe was a sixth-year student at St Munchin’s College in Limerick.
In a tribute, the school’s deputy principal Lorraine Shiels described Bryan as an “absolute gentleman to meet on the corridor”, adding that he had “a lovely kindness” and “a big heart”.
“He would do anything asked of him without complaint. There was a lovely kindness to him and a big heart. He will be sorely missed by everyone in our community,” she said in a statement on Instagram.
Ms Shiels said the school’s thoughts and prayers were with Bryan’s mother Crystal, sisters Chloe and Jane, and his friends and fellow students.
“It is heartbreaking to lose one of our boys at any time but particularly while they are still a student in our school,” she said.
She said the school would open at midday tomorrow for students who wished to come in for a cup of tea.
Reacting to news of the boy’s death, local Fianna Fáil TD Cathal Crowe said he had “no words” and expressed his sympathies to Bryan Lowe’s family, friends and the wider community.
Mr Crowe also appealed to anyone who was in the area around the time of the collision to check dashcam, CCTV or doorbell footage.
“Gardaí are appealing for information following the incident at Cottage Cross near Clonlara at around 11pm last night. I would strongly encourage anyone who was travelling in the area at or around that time to check any dash-cam footage they may have,” he said.
He urged anyone with information or footage, including local residents and businesses, to contact An Garda Síochána.
Detectives based at Henry Street Garda Station, Limerick City, are leading the investigation.
