A Tipperary football club has expressed shock after a player was shot in the arm while playing soccer in a village near the Limerick/Tipperary border.

The incident happened during a match at Rearcross shortly after 9pm on Saturday.

The adult male player who sustained the gunshot wound to the arm was treated at the scene by emergency services personnel and brought by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick for further assessment.

His injuries are understood not to be life-threatening and he is believed to have been a victim of a stray shot from a hunting activity.

In a statement, Rearcross Football Club said all at the club were "totally shocked at the turn of events last night when our Junior B team were playing a Division 2 league game under lights and a very serious incident occurred."

"We are glad to say that our player is well and was discharged from hospital earlier this morning. We wish him a speedy recovery," the club added.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses.

They are particularly appealing to individuals who may have been hunting in the area at the time to come forward.
