Two young men charged with murder of Limerick father

Two men have been charged with the murder of Limerick father Liam Higgins who died following a St Patrick’s Day assault.
Mr Higgins, aged 55, died in hospital eight days after sustaining serious head injuries in an assault at O’Dwyer’s Bridge, Athlunkard St on March 17, 2026.
Darren Mason, aged 22, of St Munchin’s St, St Mary’s Park, Limerick City, appeared before the Limerick District Court on Wednesday morning, where he was charged with the murder of Mr Higgins.
The court heard that when arrested by gardaí at a farm in Cappamore, Mr Mason said it was “not murder”.
Mr Mason had previously been charged in court with assault causing harm, violent disorder, and with producing an article.
Tyreke McNamara, aged 26, with an address at St Munchin’s St, St Mary’s Park, Limerick City, who also appeared in court on Wednesday, has also been charged for murder.
Judge Patricia Harney remanded both men in custody, to appear before the Central Criminal Court.
A third man, Brooklyn Treacy, aged 19, with an address at St Munchin’s St, St Mary’s Park, Limerick City also appeared before the court charged with the production of two articles in relation to the same incident, and has been remanded in custody.
Liam Higgins, of Mungret, Co Limerick, and late of Ryan’s Cottages and O’Malley Park, was pre-deceased by his son Jamie and father Jim..
