Cork woman accused of threatening to kill her husband and child with kitchen knife gets bail

A 35-year-old woman allegedly produced a large kitchen knife and threatened to kill or cause harm to her husband and their son on Monday afternoon. On Tuesday, she was granted bail despite garda objections.

The matter was dealt with at an in camera hearing of Cork District Court because of the domestic nature of the case.

She is charged that on Monday, February 2, at the family home in Cork she made threats to kill or cause serious harm and while so doing produced in a manner likely to intimidate, a large kitchen knife — a single charge under the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.

Frank Buttimer, solicitor, said she had a safety order against her husband that expired. He has a current safety order against her.

Judge Liz Healy was told that the alleged incident was video recorded using a mobile phone. The age of the child allegedly threatened was not given during the hearing. The complainant, who is the defendant’s husband, was present in court.

The prosecution was concerned that witnesses to the case might be intimidated if bail was granted to the accused.

Mr Buttimer said the woman had no previous convictions and had a history of difficulties at the hands of the complainant where she alleged that he had manipulated her in the past and recently. The solicitor said the defendant was keen to move out of the family home.

Judge Liz Healy remanded her on bail to appear at Cork District Court again on February 17. Bail conditions require her to live at an alternative address. The defendant came up with an address outside County Cork, where she plans to live with a friend.
