Driver clocked at 194km/h as gardaí detect more than 1,000 speeding vehicles

A motorist was detected travelling at 194km/h in a 100km/h zone in Co Donegal during a nationwide speed enforcement operation.

The driver was detected on the N56 at Letterkenny during National Slow Down Day, a 24-hour enforcement operation carried out by An Garda Síochána in partnership with the Road Safety Authority (RSA) and other stakeholders.

More than 1,000 vehicles were detected travelling above the applicable speed limit during the operation on Monday.

Other high speeds recorded included 

• 128km/h in an 80km/h zone on the R403 in Naas, Co Kildare; 
• 99km/h in a 60km/h zone on the Navan Road in Dublin 15; 
• and 104km/h in a 50km/h zone on the Dublin Road in Galway.

The operation involved gardaí, GoSafe mobile safety cameras and static safety cameras.

Focus on school traffic 

National Slow Down Day is held several times each year to highlight the risks associated with excessive or inappropriate speed and encourage motorists to comply with speed limits.

Monday's operation coincided with the first full week of schools reopening across the country, when traffic volumes are higher.

There was a particular focus on traffic activity around schools at opening and closing times.

An Garda Síochána, alongside road safety partner GoSafe, carries out speed enforcement operations on a daily basis, with National Slow Down Days forming part of wider efforts to deter and detect dangerous driving behaviour.

The initiative aims to promote safer driving and reduce speed-related collisions on roads nationwide.
