A number of trains to Dublin were delayed and cancelled this evening due to an incident on the line in Co Kildare.

Emergency services personnel attended the scene of the incident on the line between Kildare/Sallins and Newbridge shortly after 2.30pm this afternoon.

In an update on social media, Irish Rail said services between the stations had been suspended from around 3pm.

In its latest update, posted at 5.25pm, the company said it hoped to be held services would "begin departing Heuston soon".

An Irish Rail spokesperson said that the line reopened at 5.30pm and that "normal services have resumed, but are subject to delays".

According to Irish Rail the following services were affected:

  • The 3.30pm service from Heuston to Limerick was delayed by 117 minutes;
