As Shane MacGowan began his final journey, hundreds of mourners lined the streets of Dublin to say farewell.

The songwriter, who found fame as the lead singer of punk/folk band The Pogues, died at the age of 65 last week.

MacGowan's funeral procession travelled from South Lotts Road in Dublin’s southside, down Pearse Street and on to Westland Row, with hundreds of people lining the streets at each location and following the cortege.

His coffin, which was carried in a horse-drawn glass carriage, was draped in an Irish tricolour as it passed through Dublin.

It was led by the Artane Band who played some of MacGowan's hits, accompanied by the mourners who sang the songs as they lined the streets.

Prior to the procession starting, Jasper Kearney sang more sombre version of the hit song.

Fairytale of New York

The Artane Band led the mourners on a version of Fairytale of New York, which was met with applause by those who lined the streets.

Following the procession through Dublin, MacGowan’s remains were taken to Tipperary for a public funeral mass, which will be livestreamed.

It will take place at St Mary’s of the Rosary Church in Nenagh, Co Tipperary, at 3.30pm.
