Shane MacGowan's father Maurice passes away after short illness

The father of Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan has passed away after a short illness.

Maurice MacGowan died on Monday surrounded by his family at University Hospital Limerick, according to a notice on RIP.ie.

He is predeceased by his wife Therese and his son Shane, the frontman of the Pogues, who died in 2023.

His family said that the time that the outpouring of grief for Shane was a source of comfort for his elderly father.

The notice said Maurice “will be sadly missed by his loving daughter Siobhan, son-in-law Anthony, daughter-in-law Victoria (Mary Clarke) nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends”.

Maurice's wife Therese was killed on New Year’s Day in 2017 when the car she was driving his a wall at Ballintoher, Co Tipperary.

A funeral service for Maurice, who spent most of his life in Tipperary, will be held at Shannon crematorium in Clare on Saturday.

He was too frail to travel to his son’s wedding to Victoria Mary Clarke in Denmark in 2018 and wished the couple well at the time of their star-studded ceremony.

He was hugely supportive of his son throughout his career and Shane always spoke about the influence his parents had on his musical life.
