Defibrillators to be fitted in West Cork garda stations
Five West Cork garda stations are to be fitted with defibrillators as part of a new pilot project.
Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan yesterday visited Cork, where he announced that Bandon, Clonakilty, Skibbereen, Ballinspittle, and Bantry Garda stations will carry the defibrillators.
At the event, where he was joined by minister of state Jim Daly, Mr Flanagan said: “While we would all hope these defibrillators do not have to be used too often, it is vital for those in rural Ireland in particular that the public are able to respond to emergencies as quickly as possible.
“I thank everyone involved for all their work and, in particular, the trained first responders who give up their time to make sure we are all given the help we need in our moments of greatest need.”
Due to the large area of West Cork, the National Ambulance Service proposed that five defibrillators be sited at Garda stations as they are a focal point of communities and equipment would be safe from vandalism or misuse.
Also speaking at the launch, Chief Superintendent Con Cadogan said: “This is a welcome initiative and I have no doubt that it will have a great impact on the preservation of lives in our communities.
A lot of community-based groups in Cork West have their members trained as first responders and the Garda station was observed to be a central point for this equipment to be based.
“Everyone should be made aware of this as it could save a life one day.”
