Government asked to follow UK example on regulations for charities

The Government is being urged to speed up new regulations for charities.

The call comes as investigations continue into financial irregularities at suicide prevention and bereavement charity

Meetings are continuing this weekend to transfer its services to Pieta House in a bid to keep its helpline up and running.

Sheila Nordon Executive Director of the support group for the sector ICTR has said current laws are not adequate.

“Company law was designed for private companies, however there is a standard that has been developed for charities,” said Nordon.

“The charity commission in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are adopting it and we expect it to be brought in here. It spells out where the money comes from and how it’s used”
