It's marathon day today, with tens of thousands taking part in events in Dublin and Cork.

Update: Dublin's 2016 Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon was won by Siobhan O’Doherty from Tipperary in a time of 34.30.

Natasha Adams from Donegal was second across the finish line in 34.33 and Sarah Mulligan secured third place in 35.28. Sinead Kane won the Visually Impaired Category in a time of 71.00.

Speaking for the Women’s Mini Marathon, Kathy Endersen, CEO said: "Today has been a fantastic day for women and charities from all over Ireland.

"It’s very uplifting to see so many women walking, jogging and running together through the streets of Dublin today. We congratulate the winner Siobhan O’Doherty and runners up Natasha Adams and Sarah Mulligan who ran a great race.

The Vhi Women's Mini Marathon is the biggest all-women's event of its kind in the world. The first Women’s Mini Marathon began in Dublin in 1983 with 9,000 entrants,and the event currently hosts just under 35,000 women.

Women from across the 32 counties of Ireland, U.K. and Europe take part each year to raise vital funds for their chosen charities and causes.

Update: Philip Harty has won the Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon. Nollaigh O'Neill from Leevale was the first woman to cross the line.

It's marathon day today, with tens of thousands taking part in events in Dublin and Cork.

Almost 35,000 women are set to run, walk or jog the VHI Mini Marathon in Dublin city centre today, and 10,000 are also taking part in the Irish Examiner Cork City Marathon.

In Dublin, participants are raising funds for 870 charities, with aims to beat last year's record of nearly €6m.

The 10km race starts at 2pm on Lower Baggot Street and finishes at Fitzwilliam Place.

CEO of the Women's Mini Marathon is Cathy Enderson said: "The money is for all different causes and charities. We don't support any one particular charity - we allow everyone to pick their own."

In Cork, the first runners are expected home between 11.22am and 11.30am.

Runners will follow a fast, flat 26.2-mile course north to Blackpool, before swinging west towards the Jack Lynch Tunnel’s southbound bore, through Mahon and Blackrock, up the Marina and through the southern and western suburbs, west along Wilton Rd and Model Farm Rd, before turning east to head city-bound along Carrigrohane Straight to the finish line on St Patrick’s St.
