Travellers group: Unserviced site 'not ideal' but family 'relieved' they have place to stay

A spokesperson for travellers living in South Dublin says the survivors of the Carrickmines halting site fire are happy with the location of the new emergency halting site, despite the lack of facilities.

The funerals of five of the victims, Thomas and Sylvia Connors and their three children, took place in Balally earlier.

The cortege is now on its way to Wexford where another service will take place before the family of five are buried tomorrow.

Geraldine Dunne, from the Southside Traveller Action Group, says the survivors of the fire are happy that they have somewhere to go back to when they return from the south-east over the weekend.

Ms Dunne said: "The family themselves are relieved that they will have somewhere after the funerals, and coming home from Wexford, that they will have a place to stay.

"It isn't ideal, it is an unserviced site but the last one they were in was the same, it was unserviced too.

"The council will put in facilities and at the moment that is where they will stay for a couple of months, until something else is sorted for that family."
