Search stood down after arm reported sticking out of Clare canal

A search for a body in a canal in Clare has been stood down following a report of an arm seen in the water on Tuesday.

Emergency services received a call from a man whose son reported what he believed was the arm of a boy sticking up out of the canal near the Ardnacrusha power station.

Three units of the Limerick City and County Fire Service were dispatched to the scene, along with the Shannon-based Coast Guard 115 rescue helicopter, the Kilaloe-based coastguard marine rescue service and Limerick Marine Search and Rescue Service (LMSRS).

Divers attached to LMSRS searched the canal last night and this morning but were stood down this afternoon when nothing was found.

The ESB hydro electrical power station at Ardnacrusha had switched off its turbines which are located in the canal to aid the search operation.
