Crash victim becomes fifth person to die on Limerick roads this year

A man who was seriously injured in a car crash last Monday has died.

Liam O'Shaughessy (aged 26) from Kildimo, Co Limerick, sustained critical head injuries in the early morning crash near his home on August 3.

Mr O'Shaughnessy, who passed away in Cork University Hospital over the weekend after he was transferred there from University Hospital Limerick, was the fifth person to die on Limerick roads this year.

The single-vehicle collision occurred in the townland of Ballycasey, near Kildimo, on a back road off the N69, at around 3am on the Bank Holiday Monday morning.

Gardaí said that no other car was involved.

A source said Mr O'Shaughnessy was found was away from the vehicle when emergency services arrived at the scene.

Two brothers, from Ballycasey, Kildimo, who were in the car with the deceased, were treated for non-life threatening injuries at University Hospital Limerick.

Mr O'Shaughessy's devastated family had kept a vigil at his hospital bed for the last week.

A post mortem is due to be carried out on his body before it is released back to his family for burial.

A neighbour and friend of Mr O'Shaugnessy posted a single pink heart on his Facebook page as an online tribute.

Gardaí at Newcastle West are investigating the collision.
